The Big Traverse - Alta Via 1
The famous ALTA VIA N. 1 of the Dolomites with ski mountaineering.
We enter the giant mountains of the Dolomites on skis!
We leave from Lake Braies towards the Croda del Becco and the plateaus of Sennes and Fanes, reaching the famous Tofane and Lagazuoi.
From Passo Falzarego the crossing continues through the Averau and the 5 Torri, the fantastic plateau of Mondaval, the Croda da Lago, the imposing Monte Pelmo and the vertical Civetta to reach the village of Listolade in the Agordina valley.
5 days immersed in the fantastic and wild nature of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sleeping in comfortable and warm alpine huts located in the most beautiful places in the Dolomites!
Day 1
From Braies to Sennes
Lake Braies – Forcella Sora Forno – Sennes Hut 870m D+
Reached Lake Braies by car 1494m. we start by going up in front of the Croda del Becco
until we reach the Forc. Sora Forno 2389m. where the plateau of Sennes opens up in front
of us, after removing the skins we go back down until we reach the Sennes refuge where
we will stop for the night.
Refuge equipped with all comforts with the possibility of overnight stay in room with
shower and room services.
In case of bad weather/avalanche danger: Departure From the St. Uberto bend (Cortina
d’Ampezzo, Fiammes) 1449m. Climb up to Malga Ra Stua 1695m. along the forest road
from here continue along the Val Salata until you reach the Senes refuge 2116m. Total
617m. D+
Day 2
From Rifugio Sennes to Rifugio Fannes
Sennes Hut – Forcella Ciamin – Fanes Hut 736m D+
It starts again crossing the plateau slightly downhill until you reach the Fodera Vedla hut
(closed) from here you start to go up the wide valley that descends from the Forcella
Ciamin 2395m.
Once you reach the fork and remove the skins, you descend from the opposite side along
the wide gully which, with a negative difference in height of 500m, takes us back to the
Fanes refuge, which is reached by repellang for about 250m. D+
Here too, a refuge with hotel rooms equipped with all comforts.
In case of bad weather/avalanche danger: From the refuge, go down until you reach
Pederù 1548m. from here go up leaving Croda Ciamin and Col Becchei Dessora on the
left, until you reach the Fanes refuge 2060m. Total 512m. D+
Day 3
From Rifugio Fannes to Rifugio Lagazuoi
Fanes Hut – Forcella del Lago – Lagazuoi Hut 1041m D+
It starts again on the flat crossing the valley, through the pass/forc. Ju dall’Ega 2157 m.
from here you start to go up until you reach the Forc. del Lago 2486 m.
Once you have removed your skins, you go back down to the base of Cima Scottoni,
where you put skins back on and climb up Mount Lagazuoi on an easy hang to the top
where the homonymous refuge is located at an altitude of 2752m.
Possibility of Finnish barrel sauna outside.
In case of bad weather/avalanche danger: Follow the classic itinerary up to the Ju
dal’Ega pass 2157m. from here you go down the valley that leads to Capanna Alpina
1720m, you go where the road that descends from the Falzarego pass passes, from here
we have two options: go up to the top of the Falzarego pass by taxi and then go up by
cable car to the Lagazuoi refuge, or reach Passo Falzarego along the forest road that goes
up in front of Mount Setsas. and from here either go up by cable car or on skis to the
Lagazuoi refuge.
532m. D+ and then cable car.
1180m. D+ going up on skis to the Refuge.
Day 4
From Rifugio Lagazuoi to Rifugio Staulanza
Lagazuoi refuge – Forcella Averau – Passo Giau – Forcella Giau – Mondeval – Staulanza
refuge 850m. D+
Descend along the ski slope until you reach the Falzarego pass 2105m. from here you go
up to Forcella Averau 2435m. possibility of reaching this fork using the lifts.
Cross until you reach the Giau pass 2236m.
from here, remaining initially at a high altitude and then with a short ascent, you reach the
Forc. Giau 2357m. Continue downhill along the magnificent Mondeval plateau, passing
under the northern face of Monte Pelmo until you reach the Staulanza refuge 1766 m.
Refuge equipped with hotel rooms and wellness facilities with Turkish bath, sauna, outdoor
whirlpool.
Here it is possible to receive the baggage previously prepared with various clothes and
comforts.
In case of bad weather/avalanche danger: Follow the original itinerary until you reach
Passo Giau, from here descend to the hairpin bend of Malga Giau 1970m. and uphill until
we reach forc. Giau 2357m. from here, follow the original itinerary up to a few hairpin
bends below the Staulanza refuge where the refuge shuttle will soon take us up.
In case of tiredness it is possible to reach Forcella Averau with the ski lifts and go down to
Fedare along the ski slope and from here by taxi you can reach the refuge in 30 minutes driving.
Day 5
From Rifugio Staulanza back to Cortina
Staulanza Refuge – Village of Listolade in the Agordo area 700m. D+
Last day we start downhill aiming for Monte Civetta and climb up to Rifugio Coldai 2132m.
(closed) from here continue to cross until you reach the Col Negro saddle 2203m.
It passes slightly downhill under the wall of walls or the North-West of the Civetta up to the
Col Rèan saddle 2107m. from here, after removing the skins, the long descent begins
which, passing in front of the Torre Venezia and Torre Trieste, takes us back to “civilization”
where a taxi will take us back home.
In case of bad weather/avalanche danger: change your final destination by bypassing
Monte Pelmo from the south until you reach the Venezia refuge 1946m. and from here all
downhill to Villanova Borca di Cadore 998m. Total elevation gain 300m.
